NWLA Red Cross moving to new facility, volunteer training starts May 19

The Northwest Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross is relocating to a new home.

The new facility is located at 805 Brook Hollow, Shreveport (next to Country Tavern by the auto mall).

The Red Cross still needs financial help from the public to finish paying for the new building.

Elementary students from St. John Berchmans Catholic School in Shreveport will take part in a Science Olympiad tournament on Saturday, May 12, on the St. John’s campus, beginning at 8:00 a.m. 

The students will compete against each other in teams of eight members consisting of third, fourth, and fifth graders.

A number of children who might not be able to afford a gift for Mother’s Day will have a chance to treat their mothers with help from dressbarn and Volunteers of America of North Louisiana.

Dressbarn’s “To Mom, with Love” program will bring hundreds of children into local dressbarn stores across the country where they will be given $50 gift cards to shop for their mothers.

The Fit for Life Sports Weekend takes place May 12-13 and will feature more than 20,000 athletes from around the world competing in a variety of sporting events throughout Shreveport and Bossier.  

Bodybuilding, strongman competitions and arm wrestling are just a few of the varying athletes and sports you will see competing at the Shreveport Convention Center.  

Admission is $20 per person at the Shreveport Convention Center on Saturday, May 12 and will give spectators access to all events throughout the day.

Goodwill Industries named finalist in Toyota's 2012 100 Cars for Good program

North Louisiana-based Goodwill Industries announces that it has been selected as one of 500 nonprofit finalists in Toyota's 100 Cars for Good program.

The automaker is giving 100 cars to 100 vehicles over the course of 100 days. Goodwill was selected as a finalist from more than 4,000 applications nationwide.

Each day, beginning May 14, 2012, 100 Cars for Good will profile five finalists at www.100carsforgood.com.
